Self Blessing

August 26, 2010

I recently attended a silent retreat on the theme of ‘metta’ – the cultivation of loving kindness/attention through meditation. Over time we plant these seeds into each sense of ‘self’ that we identify with, and then extend it into the realm of every other that we embrace through our lives: those that benefit us; friends; those we encounter but do not know; those we struggle with; every living being on earth. It is both beautiful and powerful, surpassing feeling, becoming a prayer in the very midst of the wonder and imperfections of every day. This extract from St Francis and the Sow by Galway Kinnell was read to us one day…an invocation for self-blessing in the tiniest turnings of each heart towards life and growth.

The bud
Stands for all things,
Even those things that don’t flower.
For everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
Though, sometimes, it is necessary
To reteach a thing its loveliness,
To put a hand on the bow of the flower
And retell it, in words and touch,
That it is lovely,
Until it flowers again from within
Of self-blessing
